If you have missing teeth, dentures can provide a wonderful solution to restore the appearance and function of your teeth. Dentures are made out of a number of different materials, including acrylics and porcelain.

Dentures replace missing teeth by fitting over your natural teeth or dental implants that provide support. Partial dentures can also be used if you are only missing a few teeth, but the gap is too large for a dental bridge.

What will my dentures feel like?

When your new dentures are first placed, they may feel awkward, but this feeling will pass as you grow accustomed to using them.

After your dentures are placed, you may feel minor soreness or irritation, and you might salivate more as you get used to having the dentures in place. If problems with your dentures grow to become intolerable, schedule a follow-up appointment with your dentist.

Your dentist may be able to adjust your dentures so that any soreness or irritation is alleviated. Also, your dentures may need to be adjusted to so that they don't cause you to salivate as much. Your dentist should be able to correct any problems you have with your dentures.

How should I care for my new dentures?

  • Don't Drop Your Dentures - Although your dentures are used to chew food and restore your smile, they are still fragile. When handling you dentures, place a towel or something soft beneath them so that if they are dropped, they don't break. Also, store them in a place where they cannot be knocked over.
  • Good Oral Hygiene - Your dentures need to be cleaned once a day, just like your teeth, so that they don't decay or cause gum disease. Also, only special denture brushes, or soft toothbrushes, should be used on your dentures because harder toothbrushes can damage them.
  • Clean Your Dentures Thoroughly - Your dentures can be cleaned with mild dishwashing liquid or even hand soap, but powdered cleaners and bleach should be avoided as they can whiten the dentures too much or damage their finish.
  • Don't Let Your Dentures Dry Out - Dentures can lose their shape if they dry out while they are not in your mouth. To prevent this, dentures should be placed in a diluted cleaning solution or in water while they are not being worn.
  • Ask Your Dentist - Your dentist may have other recommendations or special products for you to use on your dentures. Ask them how they think you should maintain your dentures.

Can I eat with my new dentures?

Yes. Dentures are used to restore both the look and the function of your smile. This means that while your dentures are in place you will be able to eat like you are used to.

Since dentures may feel awkward when first being used, it is a good idea to start out eating small bites of softer foods while you are getting accustomed to the dentures. Also, really hard or sharper foods should be avoided, as they may be able to crack or break your dentures. Your dentist will be able to provide you with other guidelines to follow with your new dentures.
